Dos Mujeres Españolas / Two Spanish Women: Concepción Arenal & Victoria Kent

Dada la importancia de las protagonistas, esta semana abordaré la figura de Concepción Arenal y en la siguiente la de Victoria Kent.
Sobre el libro deciros que es de lo poquito publicado sobre estas mujeres, está muy bien documentado y es muy ameno. En él podréis encontrar las biografías de ambas, así como un anexo sobre el pensamiento feminista de Concepción Arenal. Es muy recomendable, si os interesa la cuestión de la mujer en España o si buscáis datos sobre Concepción Arenal o Victoria Kent.
Concepción Arenal y Ponte es uno de los cerebros más grandes y limpios de la España de todos los tiempos y una de las tres mujeres que más brillaron en el siglo XIX, siendo las otras dos Emilia Pardo Bazán y Rosalía de Castro. Fue la primera jurista española. (p. 17)
El nombre de Concepción Arenal sonará familiar a aquellos que vivan en Madrid o hayan pasado por esta ciudad, ya que una de las calles que salen de la Puerta del Sol, en pleno centro, se llama así en conmemoración a esta gran mujer.
No se sabe mucho de su vida porque ella la ocultó deliberadamente, decía que a las personas hay que juzgarlas por sus actos y no por sus vidas.
Se sabe que estudió Derecho en Madrid, también se sabe que acudía a las reuniones literarias y políticas del Café Iris, siempre vestida de hombre para poder acceder.
Se casa con un hombre de ideas liberales y al quedar viuda con dos niños pequeños y sin recursos para salir adelante en Madrid se traslada a Potes.
El quedarse viuda la lleva a profundizar en la esencia de la religión, no necesariamente en la eclesial, pero sí en los conceptos evangélicos como el de la ayuda al necesitado. Fruto de todo ello funda la rama femenina de las Conferencias de San Vicente de Paul y escribe varias obras sobre diferentes temas que pensaba necesitaban ser reformados: justicia, prisiones, beneficencia.
En sus escritos teoría y práctica van unidas ya que la una sin la otra son palabras vacías. Sus otros grandes temas serán la educación, en especial la educación de la mujer y la causa obrera. Fue amiga de Giner de los Ríos y participó en la Institución Libre de Enseñanza.

Last Friday, 8th of March, the day of the Woman was celebrated. Today, in a World of Biographies a review of an interesting book on the life of two Spanish women: Concepción Arenal and Victoria Kent. Concepción Arenal lived one century before Victoria Kent, even so both of them were worried about similar issues: Women and, especially, Prisons.
Given the importance of these two women, this week I will wrote about Concepción Arenal and the next one about Victoria Kent.
It needs to be said about this book, that it is one the few books about these women, it is very well documented and is very entertaining to read. The biographies of both Concepción Arenal and Victoria Kent are included, as well as an annex about the Concepción Arenal feminist thought . It is highly recommended, if you are interested in the question of women in Spain or if you are looking for information about Concepción Arenal and/or Victoria Kent.

Concepción Arenal y Ponte is one of the most brilliant and cleanest minds in the Spanish history and one of the three most important women in the 19th century. The other two were: Emilia Pardo Bazán and Rosalía de Castro. She was also the first Spanish Jurist woman. (p. 17)
The name Concepción Arenal will be familiar to those people who has ever lived or been in Madrid, as one of the streets in La Puerta del Sol, in the very centre of the city, was named after this great woman.
Not much is known about her life because she deliberately concealed it as she thought people must be judged by their acts not by their lives.
Even so, it is known that she studied Law in Madrid, also it is known that she used to attend to literary and political meetings at Café Iris. In both situations, she needed to be dressed like a man so as to be allowed to enter these places exclusively reserved to men.
She married to a liberal man who supported her ideas, but when he died, she moved to Potes in Cantabria because she was alone with two small children and not much money to survive in Madrid.
Being a widow changed his life, in the sense that she started to penetrate into the essence of the Catholic religion, not necessarily that of the church but in the evangelical concepts like that of helping the others. As a consequence she founded the feminine branch of Conferencias de San Vicente de Paul.
She also wrote several works about issues which, from her point of view, needed to be urgently reformed: justice, prisons, welfare.
In her works, theory and practice needs to go together, if real changes are sought. Other important topics for her were: education, especially the education of women and the working-class cause. She was a friend of Giner de los Rios and took part in the Institución Libre de Enseñanza.
